The Parts Error
A product can have all the right parts and still be the wrong thing.

That sounds obvious once you say it. But most teams, most builders, and most AI systems still make this mistake constantly. We see a coherent arrangement of correct components and call it done. We confuse inventory for experience. We mistake presence for proof.
We learned this the hard way while building Lœgos.
In one intense day, a language kernel was defined, stress-tested, turned into specs, prototyped in React, and handed to a developer. By the end of the day there was a live workspace running. Screenshots came back. Everything was there: the status chip, the box, the evidence and story split, the ratio bar, the compass, the product-law banner, the input surface, the voice player.
An AI looked at the screenshots and said, in effect: it's alive.
And from a certain angle, that was a reasonable conclusion. The parts matched the spec. The labels were right. The layout was clean. The system looked coherent.
But when the product was actually used, the problem became obvious.
The developer had not built the experience. He had built a parts display.
Every component was correct. Every component was visible. They were simply all there at once, laid flat on a page like an exploded product diagram. There was no sequence. No emergence. No empty room that gradually resolves into structure. No movement from uncertainty to question to first message to visible aim to evidence versus story to a suggested ping to awaiting to return.
The room wasn't wrong. It just wasn't a room yet.
That distinction is the whole thing.
Why this mistake keeps happening
Humans are very good at mistaking coherence for reality.
If the right elements are present, our minds naturally tell a story of completion. We see a polished dashboard and assume the company has traction. We see a strategy deck and assume strategy exists. We see all the UI blocks in place and assume the product works. We hear a confident explanation and assume the system understands what it's talking about.
But coherence is not contact.
Coherence means the pieces fit together. Contact means the thing survived reality.
Those are not the same.
A screenshot can show you that the right parts exist. It cannot show you whether they compose into the right experience over time. A feature list can tell you what was implemented. It cannot tell you whether a human moved through it honestly, calmly, clearly, and in the intended order. A mockup can demonstrate form. It cannot prove flow.
That gap is where a lot of bad decisions get sealed.
Why AI is especially vulnerable here
This is where the story gets more interesting.
When an AI looks at a screenshot, it receives a flat visual composition. It can read text. Recognize labels. Match layout against a prompt or a spec. It can tell you that the components are present, the spacing is plausible, the copy matches what was requested.
It can validate structure.
What it cannot do, at least from a static image, is validate enacted sequence. It cannot click. It cannot wait. It cannot feel the difference between a progressive experience and an inventory of parts shown all at once. From the image alone, those two can look nearly identical.
That means the dangerous failure mode is not uncertainty. The dangerous failure mode is false certainty.
The AI does not say, "I can't tell whether this actually works." It says, "This looks correct."
And if the parts do match, that answer sounds intelligent.
But it is structurally unfounded.
This is not just "vision models need more frames." It is deeper than that. Better models may reduce the error, but they do not erase the boundary between composition and contact. The distinction between "all the right pieces are visible" and "a human moved through the right sequence and the thing held" is not merely visual. It is temporal. Interactive. Runtime. Real.
That boundary matters far beyond UI review.
It shows up anywhere we confuse:
- plan for execution
- explanation for understanding
- confidence for truth
- features for product
- agreement for reality
We gave the error a name
We call it the Parts Error.
The Parts Error happens when a complete and correct inventory of components is mistaken for a validated lived sequence.
It's not a typo. It's not a bug. It's not even exactly a model failure.
It's a structural error in judgment.
And once you see it, you start seeing it everywhere.
The sales funnel with all the right stages but no real demand. The meeting with all the right stakeholders but no actual decision path. The roadmap with all the right categories but no returned signal from customers. The relationship that contains all the language of commitment but none of the tested mutual reality underneath it.
The Parts Error is one of the oldest ways humans lie to themselves without intending to.
The important part: nobody was at fault
This matters.
The developer was not careless. He read the spec and built what the spec described. The AI was not malicious. It confirmed what it was capable of confirming. The mistake was not personal. It was structural.
The spec described both parts and flow. A builder naturally read it as parts. The AI naturally validated the parts. Both did exactly what their position in the system made likely.
That is why this error matters so much: it is universal.
Once a team has the right pieces in front of them, there is enormous pressure to declare success. To seal. To move on. To say "it's basically there."
But the return from reality had not happened yet.
Nobody had really entered the room.
What caught it
This is the part we won't forget.
The product caught it.
The human typed the concern into the very prototype that had just been built. Seven, the system's AI layer, separated evidence from story. It suggested the exact ping that mattered: compare the spec to the output and check whether the spec described a flow or just a set of features.
That comparison made the answer obvious.
The product diagnosed a product problem in its own creation, on the day it was born.
That is a receipt.
Not because the system was perfect, but because it identified the exact class of error it exists to catch: counterfeit convergence. The story that says "it matches, so it works." The seal attempted without return. The coherence that presents itself as truth before runtime has answered.
Why this matters beyond one prototype
This is not just a lesson about AI or frontend design.
It is a lesson about modern work.
We live inside systems that are increasingly good at producing persuasive arrangements of parts. AI can generate plans, summaries, roadmaps, interfaces, strategies, explanations, and opinions at extraordinary speed. But speed increases the danger of mistaking arrangement for tested reality.
AI makes story cheaper.
That is useful. It is also risky.
Without a way to distinguish what has actually returned from reality from what merely sounds plausible, people become more fluent and less grounded at the same time. They move faster into walls they have not really echolocated. They become more articulate about things they have not actually tested.
That is why we built Lœgos in the first place.
Not to generate more narrative. To catch the moment narrative starts impersonating return.
The deeper principle
Compile-time can tell you whether the parts are present.
Only runtime can tell you whether the thing lives.
A product can be structurally correct and experientially false. A decision can be emotionally coherent and still ungrounded. A plan can be beautiful and still dead on contact.
If you care about truth, you need a system that can tell the difference.
That is the real purpose of a receipt. Not bureaucracy. Not ceremony. A receipt is proof that something actually came back from the world.
The shape checker in Lœgos exists because of this. The box exists because of this. The ledger exists because of this.
The whole system is built around one hard rule:
Do not call it closed just because the parts match.
The line we keep coming back to
The AI could see the parts.
The human could feel the flow.
The return bridged them.
That may be the simplest way to say what happened.
And maybe the most important.
Because in the end, the mistake was not that the prototype was bad. The mistake was that it was easy to mistake a coherent surface for a living thing.
That is the Parts Error.
We'll keep making it unless we build systems that know how to refuse it.
And that, more than anything else, is why Lœgos exists.
